Born and raised in Texas, Brianna sings from her roots, incorporating lamentations of lost love and soaring moments of hanging on to the good times into her bittersweet folk tunes. More recently, Brianna has branched out on her own as a singer-songwriter with a voice that is as proud as the Rocky Mountains she now calls home.

Come to Brianna’s Soundpost Session on July 9!

Brianna has opened for artists such as Lillie Mae, Son Volt and Israel Nash. She’s been compared to Lori McKenna in a recent write up by 303 Magazine in which they write, “[T]here is something about a girl and a guitar that can tug at those heartstrings. Straut pulls from her personal experiences to really give her songs a deep sense of emotion that listeners can empathize with regardless of their own personal experiences.”

Getting to Know Brianna Straut

Brianna was gracious enough to answer some questions we had about her musical background and career. Read on to learn more about this incredible artist who loves her dog and growing marigolds!

SPS: What was your relationship with music like growing up?

BS: I started playing saxophone when I was 7 years old. Imagine a kid that never sat still and always wanted to make noise. I always loved music, mostly jazz. I’m so thankful that I was learning an instrument as a kid. It’s always been such a great outlet for me.

SPS: Where in Texas are you from? Were you involved in your local music scene there?

BS: I moved to Livingston, North of Houston, when I was about 12. I started playing guitar as a teenager and mostly played for friends and family only. I didn’t start playing live shows until I moved to Denver.

SPS: What sparked your move to Denver?

BS: Ha! Just moved on a whim. I found a room for $300 a month on craigslist and decided it was a good move and it was.

SPS: What was it like to transition to a new scene? What do you like the most about the Denver music scene?

BS: Since I wasn’t playing live shows before I moved to Denver everything was new to me. I love how everyone is so involved in each other’s projects and their success. I see so many musicians in the audiences at shows. I love how supportive everyone is.

SPS: What is your record-making process like? Do you self-produce or do you have a producer you work with?

BS: Each record is different, it’s really the songs that take the lead. I haven’t self produced any records yet because I love working with other people and having their input. I work with different musicians in the studio, hiring bass, drums, electric guitar and key players. We often work in the studio on the songs.

SPS: What’s your favorite venue and/or style of venue to play?

BS: Listening shows are my favorite. I feel like you can really get into a groove unlike other shows. I write from such personal experiences, it’s nice to be able to guide people through parts of my life by song.

SPS: What’s the vibe at a typical Brianna Straut show?

BS: The vibe really depends on the crowd! It is always my hope to help create an open space for people to feel feels and experience the music.

SPS: What can our audience expect from your upcoming Soundpost Session? Will you be playing solo or will you bring some musicians with you?

BS: They can expect to hear some stories about my songs and have fun! I’ll be playing with Eric Tate who’s an incredible producer and electric guitar player.

SPS: Do you have any upcoming recording projects we can look forward to?

BS: I have a few things in the works but nothing I can talk about just yet! Stay tuned!

SPS: What do you like to do when you’re not playing music?

BS: When I’m not playing music you can find me in my garden or playing with my dog, Olive. I’m 100% obsessed with my dog and growing marigolds from the year before. Come to the show and I’m sure I’ll tell you more about it.

SPS: Where can we catch you next? (Besides, of course, at Longmont Public Media on July 9th)

BS: I’m playing a free show at the Dairy Block in Denver with a drummer that I’ve just started playing with. You can find us July 17th noon to 2pm. I’m also playing with a full band in Beaver Creek on July 27th.
